Thunderbolt's advantage is not that the number 40 is bigger than the number 10. It is that Thunderbolt is a certified specification with a floor, and USB-C is not.
Intel's published Thunderbolt 4 requirements set minimums a device must meet before it can carry the name: 40Gb/s of bandwidth, PCIe tunnelling at 32Gb/s (enough for storage in the region of 3,000MB/s), support for two 4K displays or one 8K display, wake-from-sleep when the machine is connected to a dock, DMA protection based on Intel VT-d, and a 15W floor for the power a dock must supply to each of its own accessory ports. A vendor cannot ship a Thunderbolt 4 logo on hardware that misses those. There is no equivalent gate anywhere in USB-C hub land — a $19 dongle and a $90 hub wear the same three letters.
Two of those requirements do the real work, and they are worth understanding rather than memorising.
PCIe tunnelling is the first. On a USB hub, the ethernet controller and the card reader are USB devices; they queue with your keyboard on the same shared bus. Thunderbolt carries actual PCI Express traffic over the cable, which means a dock's ethernet and storage appear to the operating system as if they were cards plugged into the machine's own internal slots, with their own allocated bandwidth. Same physical connector, structurally different plumbing.
Protocol multiplexing is the second, and it is the direct answer to the lane problem above. Thunderbolt does not hand the whole cable to whichever device asks loudest. It carves the 40Gb/s link between DisplayPort and PCIe traffic and runs both simultaneously. The trap: check your own port before you spend $370
